Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is parsed by pdf.js inside your own browser tab — it never leaves your device, nothing is stored, and neither the filename nor any content is sent to us or to analytics. Close the tab and every trace is gone. That is also why very large files are limited: your browser is doing the work.
Why can't it read my scanned PDF?
A scanned PDF is photographs of pages — there is no text layer to extract, and this tool does not do OCR (optical character recognition), so it tells you that honestly instead of guessing. The fallback works well: enter the page count manually and we estimate at roughly 300 words per page, clearly labeled as an estimate.
How accurate is the estimated reading time?
When text extraction succeeds, the word count is measured, so words ÷ WPM is exact arithmetic for the speed you entered. The uncertainty is your speed on that material — technical PDFs read slower than the 238 WPM adult average. Measure your real speed with the free 2-minute test for a number worth trusting.
What file size and length can it handle?
Up to 50 MB and 3,000 pages, processed locally. Beyond that, browsers start to struggle, so the tool asks for a manual page count instead — the estimate arithmetic is the same either way.
