Minutes = word count ÷ words per minute. A 5,000-word document at the measured adult average of about 238 WPM takes roughly 21 minutes to read silently; spoken aloud at about 150 WPM it takes around 33 minutes. Every preset in this tool is an estimate and labeled as one.
How many minutes is 1,000 words?
Silently, about 4 minutes at the 238 WPM adult average. Read aloud at roughly 150 WPM, about 7 minutes. For a speech at a deliberate ~130 WPM presenting pace, closer to 8 minutes. Your own number depends on your speed and the material's difficulty.
How accurate are the speaking and audiobook presets?
They are approximations. Clear deliberate speech runs near 150 words per minute and narration sits close to that, but real narrators, presenters, and texts vary. If precision matters — a timed talk, for example — rehearse with a clock; use this tool for planning, not for cutting it fine.
Does listening at 2x really halve the time?
Arithmetically yes — 150 WPM narration at 2x delivers about 300 WPM, so a ten-hour audiobook takes five. Whether you keep comprehension at that pace is the real question, and on new, dense material many people don't. The saved time only counts if you could retell what you heard.
